A Google Photos Alternative That Never Uploads Your Library

What people actually use Google Photos for, how each need maps to a local gallery with on-device AI, and the honest gaps - backup and sharing links.

People search for a Google Photos alternative for one of two reasons: the storage bill, or the upload itself. This post is for the second group, and it is honest about what a no-cloud gallery can and cannot replace.

What Google Photos is actually used for

Strip away the marketing and most people use it for five things: finding a photo by typing what is in it, browsing by person, being shown old memories, cleaning up junk, and light editing. Backup and sharing come after that, and they are the two that a local app cannot do.

Mapping the five

Search by typing what is in it. Pixel Gallery indexes labels, recognized text and captions on the device, and adds semantic search with an optional model, so “dog at the beach” works offline.

Browse by person. Faces are grouped locally, named by you, and can be linked to contacts. See People.

Memories. Six kinds of Stories are generated from quality scores, dates, places and colors, and can be exported as video.

Cleanup. Cleanup finds duplicates, bursts and blurry shots, and lets you swipe through candidates. Deletion goes through the 30-day trash.

Editing. A photo editor with eight tools, including face and text redaction, and a video editor.

The gaps, stated plainly

Backup. Pixel Gallery has no cloud. If you lose the phone, the app cannot help. Pair it with a backup you control: a sync to your own computer, an encrypted service like Ente, or whatever you trust. Many people keep Google Photos for backup only and turn off everything else.

Sharing links and shared albums. Not available. Share photos through any app on the phone, or on the local network with Home-View.

Other platforms. Android only today.

How to switch

  1. Export from Google Photos with Google Takeout.
  2. Copy the folders to your phone, or to the folders your backup tool syncs to the phone.
  3. Install Pixel Gallery, grant media access, and let it index while charging.
  4. Set it as the default gallery in Settings.

Face names and album membership do not transfer. People are re-grouped locally and you name them once; albums become collections you create.
