The People screen turns thousands of faces into a short list of the people in your life, and it does it without sending a single face anywhere.
How grouping works
- Detection: ML Kit finds faces and landmarks in each photo.
- Embedding: a small on-device model turns each face into a compact vector.
- Clustering: vectors that are close together become one person.
You then give a person a name, pick a cover photo, and the app keeps assigning new faces as you take photos. When two clusters look like the same person, the app proposes a merge instead of guessing.
What you can do with a person
- Name and cover: choose the photo that represents them.
- Pin: keep the people you care about at the top.
- Hide: remove a person from the People screen without deleting anything.
- Merge and split: correct clustering mistakes in either direction.
- Link a contact: optionally connect a person to a phone contact for one-tap call, message and email actions.
- Export: every photo of a person as a ZIP.
People also feed Stories, the selfies and “has faces” quick filters in Search, and the frame widget, which can show a single person.
Privacy
Face vectors and names are stored in the encrypted metadata database on the device. Hidden people are excluded from Home-View by default. Nothing is matched against any external service, and the app has no account that could carry this data elsewhere.

Questions about people
Is this facial recognition in the surveillance sense?
No. The app groups similar faces within your own library and lets you name the groups. It never compares faces with anything outside the phone.
What if two people are merged by mistake?
Open the person, select the faces that do not belong and split them into a new person. Merge suggestions can be accepted or dismissed one by one.
Why does it ask for contacts?
Only if you choose to link a person to a contact. Linking adds call, message and email shortcuts to the person's page. The permission is never requested otherwise.
