Places

Privacy
Pixel Gallery removes Android’s fine and coarse location permissions from its manifest. It cannot read your live position. It reads the coordinates already embedded in your files, which any gallery with media access can see, and stores derived places in the encrypted metadata database. Blurred sensitive media shows a generic pin instead of the exact spot.
Questions about places & map
How can there be a map without a location permission?
Cameras write GPS coordinates into the photo file. Android lets an app read those tags with the media location permission, which is separate from live location access. Pixel Gallery uses only that.
Where do place names come from?
Coordinates are reverse-geocoded into place names on the device and grouped into places you can pin or browse.
Does the map send anything to Google?
The map view loads tiles from Google Maps, so Google sees which map areas are requested. Your photos and their coordinates are not sent.
